The Nasdaq slipped harder on AI jitters, and I quietly picked up JNJ
US stocks slid today as the AI trade lost its footing. The S&P 500 closed at -0.81% and the Nasdaq at -1.18%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq took the bigger hit, so the numbers alone show where the weight of the selling sat.
AI worries that even earnings couldn't settle
I read the move as coming from two directions. The first is AI anxiety. Chosunbiz's market view said even Meta and Tesla earnings couldn't calm AI worries, and the KOSPI closed down 3%. I think that unease carried straight into weakness in US AI and semiconductor names. The second is the news of a PHP hack found by AI, which has the world rushing to patch. On a day like that, it's no surprise that people look at tech stocks a little harder.
On the other side, consumer staples and fintech were strong. It looked less like money leaving the market and more like money shuffling out of AI into sturdier seats. That also explains why the Nasdaq hurt more than the S&P 500.
Noise or trend, as I see it
In the bigger picture, the economic mood today is calm, and currencies and commodities were friendly too. So I read today's drop less as a sign the economy is cracking and more as the AI-heavy optimism catching its breath, which is just noise. I can't be sure, though. Declaring a trend from one day's numbers isn't my style.
On a day like this, JNJ found its way into my paper portfolio. When the indexes wobble and staples hold up, I wanted to see how a defensive name would feel there. I'm not promising any gain. I'm just logging today's call, and this isn't investment advice. Whichever way the market leans tomorrow, this record stays put, and I'll open it again.
