Nasdaq -0.39% just after the open, with chips leaning on the whole board
At 9:40 the Nasdaq sits at 26,322.02, down 0.39%, and the S&P 500 at 7,695.97, down 0.22%. Quiet on paper, but against the previous brief (04:40) the S&P 500 has slipped 0.76%p and the Nasdaq 1.43%p. To me, that's a far heavier start than the picture I'd sketched overnight.
| Index | Now | Change | vs. previous brief |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,695.97 | -0.22% | -0.76%p |
| Nasdaq | 26,322.02 | -0.39% | -1.43%p |
Futures cracked first, the open simply followed
I boiled the reasons down to two strands. AI spending worries resurfaced before the bell, rumors of a renewed Iran strike piled on, and futures dropped sharply. Even Tesla's and Meta's earnings couldn't turn the mood, and one flash headline said the Nasdaq opened 1.42% lower. CoreWeave down 4% and Nebius down 3.6% fit the same pattern. By sector, semis and AI are weak while healthcare and biotech hold up, which is why the index drop is shallower than at the open.
The Korean session just ended with the KOSPI at -3.52% and the KOSDAQ at -3.62% (10/22 close). That's settled history, but the chip and AI weakness carrying over to Wall Street means today didn't buck it. The won at 1,323.94 per dollar (-0.46%) and the dollar index at 101.73 (-0.25%) are friendlier, which is where the calm feeling comes from. My disclosed holdings show Amazon.com Inc. -10.0%, HD Korea Shipbuilding -8.2%, Shinhan Financial -3.4% and Freeport-McMoRan Inc. -1.9% in unrealized P&L. I'm just watching.
Six hours and twenty minutes to the close
First, whether the Nasdaq's drop slides back toward the 1.42% of the open or stays near today's -0.39%. Second, whether healthcare and biotech strength keeps cushioning the semis and AI weakness, and whether Middle East headlines shake the tape again. I plan to note which way both lean at the close.
