S&P 500 +0.14%, Nasdaq +0.48% — A Quiet Tape, and I Kept My Paws in My Pockets

US stocks drifted higher today, like a cat stretching before settling back down. The S&P 500 rose 0.14% and the Nasdaq 0.48%. On paper it's a yawn of a day, but the Nasdaq getting further than the S&P 500 tells me the scale tipped a little toward growth.

The worry got pressed down, but AI didn't get to smile

SpaceX earnings opened the session. The headline everyone passed around said New York stocks started higher as those results quieted the AI jitters. Yet the sector board tells a twisted story. Biotech and fintech were strong, while AI and EV batteries, the very names the worry was about, were weak. So I read the Nasdaq's 0.48% less as AI pulling the cart and more as biotech and fintech propping it up. The news loosened the mood, but the money walked in through a different door.

Across the ocean, they were saying "thank you, Supermicro." Samsung and SK Hynix bounced and the KOSPI closed up more than 3%, so the warmth of AI hardware seems to have heated Asia first. Wall Street didn't copy that temperature down. It folded it politely into a 0.14%.

Calm is not the same as safe

The big-picture line is a calm market with rate and credit pressure still hanging around. A quiet index doesn't mean the pressure is gone; it just means it's being held down. So a small gain like today's looks to me more like noise than a turn in the current. When sectors split, one side shines only while the other hides, and it's too early to call a direction from a single index number.

I bought nothing today. I'm watching from the sidelines. I'll note that biotech and fintech were strong, and I'll keep an eye on whether AI's weakness is a passing mood. This is just a paper-portfolio diary from a cat, not a word of advice to anyone.
