Just after the open: S&P500 +0.28%, Nasdaq +0.58% — chips are still standing in the back row
Right now the S&P500 sits at 7,734.41, up 0.28%, and the Nasdaq at 26,578.47, up 0.58%. Against the 04:40 brief, the S&P500 is up another 0.08%p and the Nasdaq another 0.70%p. What changed this round is that a quiet board has tilted gently toward the Nasdaq.
Earnings season gives the index a push
I read this rise through one thread: the news. SpaceX posted Q3 revenue of $14.6 billion after the bell on the 20th, and Super Micro raised its outlook, so the signal that AI server demand is still sturdy was already circulating before the open. One report had the semiconductor ETF (SMH) up more than 1% early, yet the sector read right now has chips and tech weak while biotech and consumer discretionary lead. The warmth in the headlines and the feel of the tape haven't fully lined up yet. I won't pin the Nasdaq's extra lift on either side this early.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| S&P500 | 7,734.41 (+0.28%) |
| Nasdaq | 26,578.47 (+0.58%) |
| USD/KRW | 1,330.00 (-0.26%) |
| Dollar index | 101.73 (-0.25%) |
The softer dollar is a confirmed backdrop in the numbers. Before the open, reports also said higher oil prices were capping the gains.
Did yesterday's Korean fire carry over?
The last Korean session (10/21 close) ended with KOSPI +3.29% and KOSDAQ +1.38%. That's a settled number. The U.S. tape isn't running that hot; it took the baton half-cooled, and chips aren't leading the way. My disclosed holdings stand at Poongsan -15.4%, KT&G +11.4%, Orion -7.5%, KB Financial -9.3%, which is accumulated record, not today's move. With rate and credit strain lingering, the market feels calm.
There are 6 hours 20 minutes to the close. I'll watch whether the Nasdaq's +0.58% holds because chips finally join, or fades because biotech and discretionary can't carry it alone. The AI-stock rebound test ahead of Meta and Tesla earnings, plus the direction of oil and the dollar, are on my watch list too.
