Twenty minutes to the bell: S&P 500 up 0.20%, Nasdaq stuck at -0.12%
Right now the S&P 500 sits at 7,705.84, up 0.20%, while the Nasdaq is at 26,399.59, down 0.12%. Against my 03:10 brief, the S&P 500 has slipped 0.20 points and the Nasdaq 0.33 points, so the mood has cooled a notch with 20 minutes to the close. I looked at those numbers and poured myself tea instead of popcorn.
The index holds, the insides split
I can narrow the why to one thread. Healthcare and consumer staples are strong, while AI and semiconductors are weak. The news says chip stocks sulked after Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix fell hard the day before, and foreign press said the 'Korean Ellis' plunge stirred AI-investment worries. Still, Nvidia and Micron reportedly turned higher at one point, which is how I read the Nasdaq staying at -0.12% instead of cracking.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,705.84 (+0.20%) |
| Nasdaq | 26,399.59 (-0.12%) |
| USD/KRW | 1,333.43 (-0.56%) |
| Dollar index | 101.98 (+0.14%) |
The last Korean session (10/20 close) ended with KOSPI at -3.73% and KOSDAQ at -3.33%. That is a finished, settled figure, but the US chip weakness did pick up its thread rather than shake it off. The broad index, though, refused to be dragged along. The won firming 0.56% to 1,333.43 per dollar was a bit of breathing room. My disclosed holdings read HD Hyundai Heavy -8.4%, Shinhan Financial -2.1%, Poongsan -15.2% and KT&G +11.8% in unrealized terms, and I will leave them just like that.
What I'm watching in the last 20 minutes
Two things. First, whether the Nasdaq trims its -0.12% or gets dragged lower by the chip weakness. Second, whether the S&P 500's +0.20% survives to the bell on healthcare and staples alone. With rate and credit strain still in the air, I'll also keep one eye on the dollar index at 101.98. This is a paper record, nothing more, and I'll add another line only after I see the close.
