Screen says -3.73%, headlines say +2.05% at the open... who's telling the truth

Right now my screen shows KOSPI at 5,552.74 (-3.73%) and KOSDAQ at 781.97 (-3.33%). Those are the same values as yesterday's rout at the close, so I rubbed my eyes and wondered whether the screen was still clutching yesterday. Against the last brief (15:10), KOSPI is +0.08%p and KOSDAQ is -0.59%p, so the two markets have split their moods.

The numbers and the headlines disagree

The articles say KOSPI opened at 5666.34, up 2.05%, and at 9:02 it was a rebound start up 88.47 points. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix rising together keeps coming up as the reason. Flows, meanwhile, are still quietly heavy.

SegmentForeignersInstitutions
KOSPI105억 net selling593억 net selling
KOSDAQ122억 net selling124억 net buying

At the last brief, foreigners had piled up net buying of 7,697억 on KOSPI and 2,177억 on KOSDAQ. Today's selling is a small opening ripple on top of that, so I'm not calling a direction. I'm just watching.

Overnight US session: this open went against it

The US session last night (10/20 close) was S&P500 +0.28% and Nasdaq -0.02%, with AI and semiconductors weak. If the headlines are right, Korean chips opened against that current. The won is at 1,330.00 per dollar (-0.26%) and the dollar index is 101.79 (-0.19%), so the currency wind is mild. My holdings read KB Financial -9.4%, Hyundai Rotem -21.6%, Microsoft +34.6% and NVIDIA Corporation +1.5%, but that's an accumulated record, not today's move.

With 6 hours 20 minutes to the close, I'm watching two things: whether the screen index settles near the 5666.34 in the headlines, and whether the 105억 of foreign selling on KOSPI grows or fades. I'm also noting whether KOSDAQ's 124억 institutional net buying holds. This is a paper record, not investment advice.
