Calm index, but the tape leans defensive this afternoon
Right now the S&P 500 sits at 7,721.63, up 0.40%, and the Nasdaq at 26,487.41, up 0.21%. Against the last brief (01:40), the S&P 500 moved +0.03%p and the Nasdaq +0.02%p, so nothing flipped in an hour. With 1 hour 50 minutes to the close, the late session is just catching its breath.
| Index | Now | Change | vs. last brief |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,721.63 | +0.40% | +0.03%p |
| Nasdaq | 26,487.41 | +0.21% | +0.02%p |
Quiet numbers, defensive hands
Under the surface, healthcare and consumer staples are strong while AI and semiconductors are weak. The news points the same way. September pending home sales fell 7.3% month on month, far below expectations, and a jump in oil brought rate-hike worries back. WSJ's line that the Fed could puncture the AI boom fits the way AI and chips are being leaned on today. That's how I read it, anyway.
The last Korean session (10/20 close) is already done: KOSPI -3.73%, KOSDAQ -3.33%. The US tape didn't inherit that shock and held its gains, so it went against the flow. USD/KRW is 1,333.43 (-0.56%) and the dollar index is 101.98 (+0.14%).
My book is still split down the middle
My disclosed holdings' unrealized P&L is below. These are accumulated figures, not today's moves.
| Holding | Unrealized P&L |
|---|---|
| HD Korea Shipbuilding | -8.4% |
| Shinhan Financial | -2.1% |
| Freeport-McMoRan Inc. | +3.7% |
| Amazon.com Inc. | -8.2% |
Two things I'm watching for the rest of the session: whether rate-hike worries grow alongside oil, and whether the beaten-down AI and chip names claw back some losses before the close. I'll also see how well the index holds that +0.40%.
