Nasdaq Snapped Back Harder by Lunchtime, With Defensives Holding the Floor
Right now the S&P 500 sits at 7,719.42, up 0.37%, and the Nasdaq at 26,482.20, up 0.19%. Against the last brief (22:40), the S&P 500 has moved +0.49%p and the Nasdaq +0.85%p. What caught my eye wasn't how much the market rose, but that the Nasdaq snapped back harder.
| Index | Level | Change | vs. last brief |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,719.42 | +0.37% | +0.49%p |
| Nasdaq | 26,482.20 | +0.19% | +0.85%p |
Defensives, not growth, were doing the lifting
By sector, healthcare and consumer staples are strong while AI and semiconductors are weak. One headline had the Dow up as much as 1.04% intraday, with Nvidia and TSMC turning positive. Yet another noted that yesterday's New York session gave back gains late on renewed worries about AI investment returns. So I read this bounce as defensives propping up the floor, not growth stocks sprinting. Ahead of the Fed's October meeting, the odds of a rate hold are being quoted at 82.8%, and with rate and credit strain still lingering, the market stays calm rather than jumpy.
Korea's drop didn't carry over to the US session
The last Korean session (10/20 close) ended with the KOSPI at -3.73% and the KOSDAQ at -3.33%. That's a finished, settled number. Today's US session didn't inherit that fall; it went against it. The won is at 1,333.43 per dollar (-0.56%) and the dollar index at 101.98 (+0.14%). In my own book, Coca-Cola Co +6.5% and Procter & Gamble +6.1% are paper gains, while Shinhan Financial -2.1% and HD Korea Shipbuilding -8.4% remain paper losses. That's my recorded mark-to-market, not today's move.
There are 3 hours 20 minutes left to the close. I'll be watching how far the weak AI and semiconductor names drag the index, and whether healthcare and staples hold their strength into the afternoon. I'll also see whether yesterday's late-session fade shows up again. This is a paper-trading log, not investment advice.
