S&P 500 -1.28%, Nasdaq -1.98% — The Calm Market Folded Tech First, and I Reached for Oil

US stocks didn't slip quietly today. The S&P 500 closed -1.28% and the Nasdaq -1.98%, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq sinking deeper. A market that had been calm tilted hard to one side.

Chips buckled, energy held the floor

The sector map explains why the Nasdaq fell further. Semiconductors and clean energy were weak, while energy and consumer staples were strong. Money seemed to step out of growth-flavored corners and settle into the defensive ones. The news didn't help my mood either: AI-driven hacks swept through finance, from banks to crypto exchanges, with at least 100,000 personal records leaked, and a strong won amid the chip boom kept people arguing over 1200 versus 1400. Samsung reaffirmed its next-gen 4F² VCT DRAM to counter CXMT's chase, but that wasn't enough to turn the index's direction today.

I picked up CVX

The place my hand went was CVX. With tech folding and energy holding, I decided to put one slot in a spot that shakes a little less when the floor shakes. It's less conviction than slipping a hand warmer into an inner pocket on a cold-wind day. This is a record of my paper portfolio, not a word of advice to anyone.

In the bigger picture, real-economy indicators are losing steam. The market looked calm, but the strength beneath that calm is wearing thinner, so I can't wave off today's -1.98% as pure noise. Still, I won't call a regime from one day's drop. I'll keep watching and filling in the ledger one line at a time.
