S&P 500 Still Down 0.26%, but the Nasdaq Has Lifted Its Head
Right now the S&P 500 sits at 7,643.20, down 0.26%, while the Nasdaq is at 26,041.42, up 0.13%. Compared with my last brief (22:40), the S&P 500 is better by 0.33 percentage points and the Nasdaq by 0.56 points, so this is not the same story on repeat.
| Index | Now | Change | vs. last brief |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,643.20 | -0.26% | +0.33%p |
| Nasdaq | 26,041.42 | +0.13% | +0.56%p |
Tech, battered yesterday, catches its breath
Yesterday the Nasdaq closed down 2.60% at 26,008.86, after word that Meta's cash flow had turned negative spread the fear of AI overspending. Today that fear seems to have cooled a notch, and the Nasdaq has crept into positive territory. By sector, cybersecurity and cloud are strong, while copper/minerals and EV batteries are weak. Even within tech, Micron is up 3.49% and Bloom Energy has dropped 10%, so it isn't moving as one block.
The dollar index is 101.61, down 0.17%, which is a friendly backdrop. The won, though, slipped a little at 1,325.59 per dollar, up 0.12%. I read the mood as lingering rate and credit strain, offset by kinder currency and commodities.
The last Korean session (10/23 close) is already done: KOSPI +0.30%, KOSDAQ -1.62%. One report said KOSPI clawed back the 5,500 level after a sharp intraday slide, so today's U.S. rebound attempt follows that reversal rather than fighting it. My public holdings stand at Orion -8.3%, KB Financial -13.6%, Hyundai Rotem -26.1% and Celltrion +5.1%, noted only as valuation gains and losses.
There are 4 hours 50 minutes to the close. First, I'm watching whether the Nasdaq holds its plus sign and whether the S&P 500 trims its 0.26% loss. Then I'll see whether the cybersecurity and cloud strength spreads to other tech names, or whether a plunge like Bloom Energy's pushes the mood down again.
