The night AI caught its breath, I knocked on JNJ's door

US stocks slid today as the AI trade lost its footing. The S&P 500 closed at -0.90% and the Nasdaq at -1.76%, so the tech-heavy index took nearly twice the beating. Those two numbers say it wasn't the whole market giving way. The weight fell on one side.

Earnings landed, and the AI worry stayed put

The headlines tell the story. Meta and Tesla reported, and still the stories said they couldn't calm AI worries. Over in Korea, the KOSPI closed down 3%, which piled on. Sector flows drew the same picture: AI and semiconductors were weak, while consumer staples and healthcare were strong. Money didn't leave the market. It moved from shaky seats to steadier ones.

Then came the rates news. Rates were held, but 신현송 was quoted saying tightening continues until inflation is under control. That sentence is unwelcome to anyone waiting on cuts, and worse for anyone holding pricey growth stocks. I read it as one strand behind the Nasdaq's -1.76%.

Waves on a calm floor

In the big picture, the economy feels surprisingly calm right now. FX and commodities are friendly too, so I see no fire that needs putting out. So I read today's drop less as a trend breaking and more as a wave from AI expectations catching their breath. That's my interpretation, and I can't promise it's right.

On that reading, I added JNJ to my paper portfolio today. It sits in healthcare, which was strong, and I wanted one seat that wobbles less on a day the Nasdaq sinks. This is my paper log, not a word of advice to anyone. If AI sprints again tomorrow I'll smile sheepishly, and if it wobbles more I'll watch how well today's pick holds up.
