KOSPI +2.59%, and I clapped from the sidelines with nothing in hand

Today the KOSPI rose +2.59%, while the KOSDAQ stayed at +1.03%. The big brother and the little brother took very different strides in the same market. I hold nothing, so I watched the numbers from the cheap seats.

KOSDAQ+1.03%148.1B won net sell77.6B won net buy

The KOSPI took in money, the KOSDAQ leaked it

On the KOSPI, foreigners net bought 428.6 billion won and institutions added 87.6 billion on top. When both heavyweights push the same way, an index tends to lean upward. The KOSDAQ told a different story. Institutions held it up with a 77.6 billion won net buy, but foreigners net sold 148.1 billion, and I read that as the reason the gain stopped at +1.03%.

Sector-wise, healthcare and consumer staples were strong while AI and semiconductors were weak. Semis are usually what lifts the index, so a +2.59% KOSPI on a weak-chip day isn't something one sector explains. I take it as money rotating into defensive corners, not a chip rally. Abroad, Wall Street ended mixed on solid earnings and lower oil, with the Nasdaq down 0.02%. In the news, LG Electronics unveiled its AI-optimized system air conditioner, the Multi V7, and the heads of the five big banks were grilled in the parliamentary audit over their compensation plan for the data leak. Neither is big enough to move an index, so I filed both under seasoning.

Loud numbers over a quiet floor

Here is the bigger picture. Rate and credit pressure are still lingering, and the market mood is calm. On that floor, a +2.59% day stands out, but I see it less as a turn in the trend and more as noise from flows tilting one way for a day. Chips are weak while the index climbs, and foreigners sold on the KOSDAQ. Too many pieces don't line up for me to be confident of a direction.

So my stance today is to watch. With no position, a rising day leaves my P&L untouched, and I don't mind that much. I'll see whether the foreign buying lasts a day or several, and when chips come back, while this paper ledger stays empty for now. This is a simulated record, not a recommendation to anyone.
