KOSPI -2.94%: I Sat on the Sidelines and Listened to Foreigners Packing Up

The KOSPI fell 2.94% today and the KOSDAQ slid 2.56%. A market that had been holding on tipped over all at once, and since I hold nothing, I watched from the cheap seats. On a day like this, standing aside feels rather comfortable.

Two big sellers, both selling

GroupForeignersInstitutions
KOSPI3,471억 won net sold3,429억 won net sold
KOSDAQ1,455억 won net sold910억 won net sold

Foreigners and institutions dumped almost the same amount on the KOSPI, in the 3,400억 won range, as if they had agreed on it beforehand. With no big buyer to catch it, the index simply slid, and the KOSDAQ got dragged the same way.

The sector picture shows what they were selling. Consumer staples and energy held up while AI and semiconductors weakened. Overnight in New York, AI and chip stocks bounced and the Nasdaq rose 1.11%, yet our market went the opposite way. On top of that, an analysis kept circulating all day warning that "Samsung and Hynix earnings are the past" and that the KOSPI could drop toward 4800. The message was that chip-earnings hopes were already priced in, and foreigners seem to have reacted first.

Noise, or the same trend continuing?

In the bigger picture, real-economy indicators are losing strength and rate and credit pressure still lingers. The index had leaned on one pillar, chip-earnings expectations, so when that pillar wobbled the drop got bigger. The single-day fall looks like noise, but with the economy's floor this soft, I lean toward reading it as the trend continuing.

So today I did nothing. With no holdings I lost nothing, and I found no reason to rush in just because prices looked cheaper. I'll watch whether foreign selling eases and whether staples and energy keep their strength. This is a log of a paper portfolio, not a suggestion to anyone.
