Nasdaq -2.06%: One More Step Down the Staircase

It's 14:10 ET on the US tape, with 1 hour 50 minutes left to the close. The S&P 500 sits at 7,658.43, down 1.11%, and the Nasdaq at 26,163.88, down 2.06%. We've gone one more step down since the last brief, and the first thing I did was check which side of the market took that step.

IndexNowChangevs. last brief
S&P 5007,658.43-1.11%-0.41%p
Nasdaq26,163.88-2.06%-0.59%p

The tech side widened the gap

Since the last brief, the Nasdaq slipped further (-0.59%p) than the S&P 500 (-0.41%p), and the sector map nearly explains it on its own. AI and semiconductors were weak, while consumer staples and healthcare were strong. The 02:26 headline already said the Nasdaq's drop had widened to 2.2%: money leaving the aggressive seats and sliding into the defensive ones. Still, the dollar index is at 102.00 (-0.54%) and USD/KRW at 1,339.35 (-0.07%), so the dollar is soft. This isn't a panicked run for cover.

America didn't inherit Korea's bounce

The Korean session that already ended (10/16 close) finished strong, with KOSPI +2.05% and KOSDAQ +4.46%. Today's US tape didn't carry that warmth forward. It went against it. My disclosed holdings stand at Vertex Pharmaceuticals -5.9%, ConocoPhillips +15.3%, Orion -10.4% and KB Financial -9.4%. That's accumulated P&L, not today's move, and I just sit here quietly fiddling with my whiskers.

Over the next 1 hour 50 minutes I'm watching two things. First, whether the Nasdaq holds near this -2.06% or the drop opens up another notch. Second, whether the strength that hid in staples and healthcare lasts into the closing bell. If the drop narrows, it was an afternoon flush. If it widens, this stops being a staircase and becomes a ramp.
