Nasdaq -1.47%, Tilting Further in an Hour — Even a Dovish Word Couldn't Hold It

Right now New York has the S&P 500 at 7,690.15 (-0.70%) and the Nasdaq at 26,319.11 (-1.47%). Since the last brief (00:10), the S&P 500 has slipped another 0.41 points and the Nasdaq another 0.38. An hour ago it was a mild wobble. Now I'm raising an eyebrow.

Soothing words, lower prices

The odd part is that the news isn't bad. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh sidestepped any talk of further tightening, which made a rate hike less likely, and gold rose 1%. Yet Treasuries weakened even after that dovish tone, with a bounce of selling. Soft words, it seems, aren't being taken at face value.

Sectors are pushing in the same direction: consumer staples and healthcare are firm while AI and semiconductors are weak. That's how I read the Nasdaq falling more than twice as hard as the S&P 500. With real-economy data losing steam, money looks to be hiding in defensives and trimming growth.

Korea's rally didn't carry over

The last Korean session (10/16 close) ended with KOSPI +2.05% and KOSDAQ +4.46%, an eight-session-low bounce. That's a finished, settled number. Tonight's US session isn't inheriting that warmth; in semiconductors it's going the other way. FX is calm, with USD/KRW at 1,339.35 (-0.07%) and the dollar index at 102.00 (-0.54%), so this isn't a dollar-driven tape.

My public holdings read Orion -10.4%, KB Financial -9.4%, Hyundai Rotem -12.9%, Celltrion +4.8%. Those are mark-to-market figures, not today's moves. I leave them on the ledger and keep watching.

3 hours 20 minutes left: what I'm watching

Two things. First, whether the Nasdaq's -1.47% widens further or semis catch their breath and narrow it. Second, whether Treasuries, weak even after Warsh's remarks, settle down. The pace of roughly 0.4 points lower per hour is either going to continue or snap, and that's what I most want to know before the close.
