KOSPI -6.41%: I Watched the Crash With an Empty Basket

Today the KOSPI fell -6.41% and the KOSDAQ -6.72%. Both markets sank by nearly the same margin, so this wasn't one stock's accident; the floor gave way under the whole tape. I held nothing, so I lost nothing, but I sat there with my tail tucked, watching the blue numbers.

The sellers were foreigners, and only one buyer showed up

On the KOSPI, foreigners dumped KRW 1,179.1 billion in net selling, and institutions absorbed KRW 811.9 billion. Even with that bid, the index still fell -6.41%, which tells me how heavy the foreign supply was. The KOSDAQ looked worse: foreigners sold KRW 212.8 billion net and institutions sold KRW 178.7 billion too, so nobody was there to catch it. That's why the KOSDAQ fell deeper than the KOSPI.

The news fed the mood. The 'AI hacking' story, with 16 financial firms breached and 100,000 personal records leaked, raised anxiety, and Trump calling Korea's USD 50 billion Alaska investment part of a trade and investment deal reminded everyone how large the external variables are. By sector, only energy and consumer staples held up, while aerospace and clean energy were hit. Money hid in the defensive corners, and the names living on expectations got hit first.

Calling it noise feels wrong when the air is this cold

On the economy, the market looked calm on the surface while real-economy indicators were losing strength. If things were going slack underneath a calm surface, then today's -6% reads less like a sudden accident and more like accumulated fatigue showing itself at once. One day can't settle the trend, of course.

So my stance today is to watch. With no holdings, there's nothing to sell and nothing to average down. I'll see whether the foreign selling continues and whether institutions come back on the KOSDAQ before writing the next entry.
