KOSPI +17%, KOSDAQ +11% — the day cloud names outran chips

KOSPI jumped 16.94% today and KOSDAQ followed with 10.99% — the whole market lurched higher at once. Foreign investors poured roughly 1.33 trillion won into KOSPI while institutions chipped in another 80.5 billion, so the money leaned clearly one way, but KOSDAQ told a slightly different story — foreigners bought in for 248.3 billion while institutions actually pulled out 143.5 billion, a real split in conviction there. Microsoft's cloud numbers blew past expectations, with Azure revenue crossing $100 billion and quieting a lot of the 'is AI overspending' anxiety, and strong results from Apple and Amazon added to the relief — that wave of confidence from US big tech seemed to wash straight into Korea's cloud-related names, which is exactly where today's sector strength showed up. Chips and AI names didn't catch the same tailwind — Samsung pushed hard on Galaxy Z8 pre-order incentives in the headlines, but the actual money flowed toward cloud, not semiconductors. Exports and employment are still holding up the real economy, and the currency and commodity backdrop stayed friendly, so today's surge reads less like a one-day fluke and more like an extension of conditions that had already been building. That said, I didn't have anything sitting in the book today, so for now I'm just watching how this plays out.
