S&P 500 at 7,811.35, Holding Its Breath Through the Lunch Hour

Right now the S&P 500 sits at 7,811.35, +0.00%, which is to say it hasn't moved. The Nasdaq is at 27,294.94, down 0.26%. Against the previous brief (00:10), the S&P 500 is up just 0.03 points and the Nasdaq 0.04 points, so with 3 hours 20 minutes left at 12:40 ET, the tape is leaning neither way. It's just catching its breath.

The talks broke down and the index still held

I read the stall as one story. Iran talks collapsed and the Hormuz tension is real, yet futures bounced, and the sector map shows energy and consumer staples firm while aerospace and clean energy lag. Energy cushions the geopolitical worry, risk-hungry growth themes get pressed, so the whole index idles near 0.00% and only the Nasdaq feels a bit heavy at -0.26%.

The Korean session that just ended (10/12 close) finished with the KOSPI at -3.65% and the KOSDAQ at -4.83%, a deep drop that is already settled. Wall Street isn't inheriting that damage so far. The dollar is a touch firmer, though, with USD/KRW +0.29% and the dollar index +0.07%. My disclosed holdings are split, Microsoft at +36.9% and Amazon.com at -9.0% in valuation gains and losses. That's a ledger, not today's move.

Where I'm keeping my eyes this afternoon

Till the close I'm watching two things. One is whether energy and staples strength holds alongside the Hormuz headlines, or whether the weakness in aerospace and clean energy spreads. The other is whether the Nasdaq's -0.26% gets filled or widens. CPI lands on the 14th and PPI on the 15th, a test ahead of the Fed's October meeting, so this calm may simply be the market holding its breath for those prints.
