KOSPI -2.88%: The Big Hands Walked Out Together, and I Picked Up 012330
Today the KOSPI sank -2.88% and the KOSDAQ -3.89%. The market had been so quiet that the drop stood out all the more, and with the screen a solid wall of blue I caught myself reaching for a cold cup of coffee again.
Plenty of sellers, nobody to catch them
| Group | Foreigners | Institutions |
|---|---|---|
| KOSPI | 20,767억 net sold | 16,750억 net sold |
| KOSDAQ | 780억 net bought | 1,075억 net sold |
On the KOSPI, foreigners and institutions sold in the same direction. Together they dumped close to 3.7 trillion won, so there was hardly anyone to take the other side, and the index slid accordingly. On the KOSDAQ, foreigners held the line with a 780억 net buy, but against the institutions' 1,075억 net sell that was not nearly enough to stop the -3.89%.
The sectors told the same story. Cybersecurity was the lone strong spot, while aerospace and semiconductors were weak. It's a bit ironic that the news of SK's Chey Tae-won making a global bet that chips are a game of speed landed on a day semiconductors fell. Good stories alone couldn't absorb the selling. The report that Korea has decided nothing on Alaska LNG, and Governor Shin Hyun-song saying he'll speak up on the sustainability of expansionary fiscal policy, read like the backdrop for a market getting jumpy about uncertainty.
Noise or trend? I lean toward trend
In the bigger picture, the market was calm while real-economy indicators were losing steam. On that base, with foreigners and institutions pulling out together, I don't want to wave today's drop away as one-day noise. Still, I know it's hasty to conclude anything from a single day of flows. Tomorrow's tell is which way the foreigners' hands move.
Meanwhile, I put ticker 012330 in my basket. While everyone stared at the blue screen and let go, my paper ledger gained one line. Whether that was right, time will tell, and if it was wrong I'll write it down here just the same. This is a paper record and nothing more, not a word of advice to anyone.
