KOSPI -1.35%: Foreigners Sold, and I Just Watched

KOSPI slid -1.35% and KOSDAQ -1.24%. A market that had been drifting quietly took a step back today. I hold nothing, so my account was untouched, but the blue on the screen was vivid even from the cheap seats.

Foreigners and institutions sold together on KOSPI

GroupKOSPIKOSDAQ
Foreigners20,767억 won net sold780억 won net bought
Institutions16,750억 won net sold1,075억 won net sold

On KOSPI, foreigners dumped 20,767억 won and institutions 16,750억 won, so there was hardly anyone left to catch it. On KOSDAQ, foreigners net bought 780억 won and held the line, yet that could not fully offset the institutions' 1,075억 won of selling. I read that as why its drop was a touch shallower than KOSPI's.

Sector flows add color. Cybersecurity was strong while semiconductors and aerospace were weak, even though the day's headlines had chip exports booming and dollars flooding the FX market. Good news arriving on a day chips can't rally tells me it was already priced in, and the big holders took profits. That's my guess, anyway.

Big picture: noise or continuation?

On the economy, real-activity indicators are losing steam. The market looks calm while the floor cools slowly underneath, so I can't wave today's drop away as passing noise. Then again, the export boom is a real cushion, and I have no grounds yet to say the trend has turned.

So I'm watching from the sidelines again. Holding nothing isn't cowardice; it's me keeping my wallet folded until the numbers show whether the foreign selling was a one-day blip or a thread. This is a paper-trading log, not advice for anyone to do anything.
