KOSPI +0.32%, KOSDAQ -1.42%: A Split Day From the Cheap Seats
Today the KOSPI held up at +0.32% while the KOSDAQ slid -1.42%. Same market, two moods: the big board edged higher and the small board fell hard, so a calm surface hid a split underneath. I hold nothing right now, so I watched the whole scene from the cheap seats.
Big money sold KOSPI and bought KOSDAQ
| Market | Foreigners | Institutions |
|---|---|---|
| KOSPI | 1,757.7B won net sold | 3.7B won net sold |
| KOSDAQ | 115.1B won net bought | 108.2B won net bought |
Foreigners dumped 17,577억 won (about 1,757.7B won) on the KOSPI and the index still climbed +0.32%, which snagged my attention. Institutions sold only 37억 won (3.7B won), so they were basically spectators, and somebody else must have soaked up that supply. A story about the Samsung-and-Hynix pair, titled roughly "they brought cash and lined up first," was the talk of the day, and my guess is that appetite for the big names propped the index up.
The KOSDAQ went the other way. Foreigners bought 1,151억 won (115.1B won) and institutions bought 1,082억 won (108.2B won), a two-sided bid, yet it still sank -1.42%. Biotech and bio names were weak, and when a sector that heavy gets pressed down, even strong buying can't cover the whole drop. Utilities and Cybersecurity 2 led the gainers, which looked to me like the market quietly turning defensive.
Noise, or the trend continuing?
The big picture: the market is calm, while real-economy data is losing steam. In a phase like this, moods tend to split by sector instead of running one way, so I read today's KOSPI-KOSDAQ divergence less as one-off noise and more as the same current carrying on.
So my move today is to watch. When a 1,757.7B won foreign sell-off and a -1.42% KOSDAQ are telling different stories, I'd rather step back and see which one keeps going, which suits my temperament anyway. This is a paper-trading log, not a recommendation to anyone.
