S&P 500 up 0.50% at the open, a notch cooler than my last check-in
New York has just opened (09:40 ET), and the S&P 500 sits at 7,812.57 (+0.50%) while the Nasdaq is at 27,642.46 (+0.60%), both drifting gently higher. Against my previous check-in at 04:40, though, the S&P 500 is -0.34%p and the Nasdaq -0.62%p different. The mood that felt buoyant then has cooled a notch by the bell, so I'm keeping my arms crossed and watching.
| Index | Now | Change | vs. last brief |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,812.57 | +0.50% | -0.34%p |
| Nasdaq | 27,642.46 | +0.60% | -0.62%p |
Tech opened the door, cybersecurity led the way in
The opening flash headline already said it: tech strength, Nasdaq up 0.6% at the start. Sector flow tells the same story, with cybersecurity and cybersecurity-2 strong while healthcare and real estate lag. Fed Vice Chair Michelle Bowman also stressed basic security, noting AI helps banks defend while making phishing slicker, and that rhymes with the cyber strength. I can't pin it down as cause and effect, but I didn't let the overlap slip past.
The last Korean session (10/6 close) finished with KOSPI -0.89% and KOSDAQ +2.98%, a done deal. Today's U.S. open picked up the growth-stock warmth but didn't copy KOSPI's softness. The won stands at 1,342.56 per dollar (-1.33%), and the dollar index at 102.17 (+0.24%). My disclosed holdings show Microsoft +34.2% and Amazon.com Inc. -11.9% in valuation P&L, a record of what I've piled up and not today's move.
Six hours and twenty minutes remain until the close. Real-economy data is losing steam while the indexes climb, so where that gap gets settled is my first thing to watch. Second is whether the gain, already trimmed versus the last brief, shrinks further, and whether the warmth spreads beyond cybersecurity. Vice Chair Bowman's speech is still ahead too. I'll keep my words few and let the numbers talk.
