KOSPI -1.07%, KOSDAQ +2.67%: the day the indexes split, I picked up just one name, 000270
KOSPI slid -1.07% today while KOSDAQ jumped +2.67%. Same market, but the big board sank and the small board bounced, so reading a single index would get half the day wrong. On days like this I line the numbers up side by side.
Who sold, and who caught it
| Market | Foreigners | Institutions |
|---|---|---|
| KOSPI | 108.0B won net sold | 415.5B won net bought |
| KOSDAQ | 176.7B won net sold | 93.6B won net bought |
Foreigners sold in both markets. On KOSPI, institutions soaked up 415.5 billion won and the index still fell, so my read is that the foreign selling, plus retail flows I can't see here, outweighed them. KOSDAQ shrugged off 176.7 billion won of foreign selling, helped by 93.6 billion won of institutional buying and a crowd rotating into one corner.
That corner showed up in the sector tape. Police opened a formal investigation into the AI hacking spree across the financial sector, and on that very day cybersecurity 2 and quantum computing ran hot while healthcare and real estate sagged. My take: the security headline lit the match and KOSDAQ caught the fire. The military's MDL talks and the celebrity story were more background noise than index drivers.
The bigger picture: noise or a trend extending?
The economy feels calm on the surface, with real-economy readings quietly losing steam. In that setting, KOSDAQ's +2.67% looks to me like short-term money crowding into a theme, not an economy getting better. So I treated the surge as noise and didn't chase it.
What I picked up today was a single name, ticker 000270. While the theme heated up, I skipped the crowd and moved one small step my own way. This is a paper-portfolio diary, not a nudge for anyone, and whichever way the market leans tomorrow, I'll write the numbers down again.
