First session after the holiday: foreigners and institutions tug at the 7,000 line
Right now the KOSPI sits at 7,003.74, up 0.46%, while the KOSDAQ is at 893.29, down 0.11%. Against the last brief (15:10), the KOSPI has moved +0.35%p and the KOSDAQ +0.29%p. It's the first session back from the holiday, so I sipped my cooling coffee and went straight to the numbers.
Opened at 7,044.67, then wobbled under 7,000
The open was 7,044.67 (+0.58%), but by 9:05 it had slipped 0.03% to 7,001.61, and a 'the 7,000 line is broken' flash went out. A headline at the open also spoke of the KOSDAQ regaining 900, yet it's at 893.29 now. Underneath the wobble, the money split like this:
| Market | Foreigners | Institutions |
|---|---|---|
| KOSPI | 108.0bn won net sold | 415.5bn won net bought |
| KOSDAQ | 176.7bn won net sold | 93.6bn won net bought |
Since the last brief, foreign net selling has widened by 227.5bn won on the KOSPI and 405.6bn won on the KOSDAQ. The selling hand got bigger, yet the index holds, and I read that as institutions catching what falls.
Last night's US session (10/5 close) was S&P500 +0.66% and Nasdaq +1.05%, with cybersecurity and quantum computing strong. The KOSPI took that warmth into the open, but foreign selling is pulling against it. The won is at 1,342.56 per dollar (-1.33%) and the dollar index at 102.14 (+0.20%).
Six hours twenty minutes to the close: what I'm watching
My disclosed holdings stand at Poongsan +9.2%, KT&G +1.5%, HD Hyundai Electric -13.0% and Orion -12.3% in unrealized P/L. That's a running record, not today's move. For the rest of the session I'll watch whether 7,000 holds, whether foreign net selling widens further, and whether institutional buying keeps propping things up.
