Nasdaq +0.91%, and the PCE Warmth Lingering in a Quiet Afternoon
Right now the S&P 500 sits at 7,701.39, up 0.40%, and the Nasdaq at 27,040.08, up 0.91%. Against my last brief (01:40), the S&P 500 is 0.09 points cooler and the Nasdaq 0.04 points cooler. Still green, but I read it as the morning's warmth slowly draining out.
Prices cooled, long yields didn't
The source of that warmth is August PCE coming in below expectations. Bets on an October rate hike faded fast, the Nasdaq reacted harder, and biotech led the sectors. Yet as the stories pointed out, long-term yields still crept higher despite the soft print. That's why both indexes are up but by less than before. To me, that narrower margin is the sign that rate pressure hasn't gone anywhere. Gold miners and fintech lagged.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,701.39 (+0.40%) |
| Nasdaq | 27,040.08 (+0.91%) |
| USD/KRW | 1,359.56 (+0.37%) |
| Dollar index | 101.37 (+0.17%) |
The dollar is firmer too, pushing USD/KRW to 1,359.56. For a day when risk assets are smiling, the dollar is lifting its head, so I don't think this warmth is entirely comfortable. The Korean session that already closed (9/30 close) had the KOSPI at -0.48% and the KOSDAQ at +0.72%. The KOSDAQ's growth-stock glow rhymes with today's Nasdaq strength, while the KOSPI didn't fully catch that current.
My own book, quietly standing still
My disclosed holdings stand at Freeport-McMoRan +6.0%, Amazon.com -12.4%, Vertex Pharmaceuticals -0.7% and ConocoPhillips -0.7% in unrealized P&L. Even on an up day my book goes its own separate ways. Vertex sitting at -0.7% on a strong biotech day is a little awkward. Still, that's unrealized P&L, not today's move.
With 1 hour 50 minutes to the close, I'm watching two things. First, whether the Nasdaq's +0.91% holds while long yields keep climbing. Second, whether oil and jobs data shake the easing hopes, as the stories warned. Meanwhile I plan to sit quietly and watch.
