The 'flat' tape quietly stepped back, and a 5.609% 30-year yield raised my eyebrow
Right now the US tape is drifting lower, quietly: the S&P 500 sits at 7,662.92 (-0.27%) and the Nasdaq at 26,781.69 (-0.14%). At the last brief things looked flat, so this is a small step back, and I wanted to know where it came from. There are 3 hours 20 minutes left to the close.
| Index | Now | Move | Vs. last brief |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,662.92 | -0.27% | -0.10%p |
| Nasdaq | 26,781.69 | -0.14% | -0.13%p |
Only the long end climbed the hill
My suspect is rates. The 30-year Treasury yield hit 5.609%, the highest since 2002, while the 2-year, which tends to track the Fed's short-rate stance, barely budged at 4.922%. Short end calm, long end running: I read that as the market pricing in how stubborn inflation is. September consumer confidence fell to a 12-year low, and Fed officials are still said to lean toward hikes, which only fed the worry.
The Nasdaq carries one more weight. News that OpenAI paused training rattled the chip names while security stocks held firm. By sector, healthcare and energy are strong while gold miners and self-driving names are weak.
A Korean session already in the books, and my ledger
The last Korean session (9/29 close) ended with the KOSPI at -0.27% and the KOSDAQ at +0.38%. The US tape echoes the KOSPI's soft side but hasn't borrowed the KOSDAQ's warmth. The won stands at 1,354.51 per dollar (-0.94%) and the dollar index at 101.20 (+0.23%). My disclosed holdings show Microsoft +28.7%, NVIDIA Corporation +8.0%, Poongsan +7.7% and Freeport-McMoRan Inc. +5.1% in unrealized P&L, cumulative numbers, not today's moves.
In the hours left, I'll watch first whether the 30-year yield pushes past 5.609% or catches its breath. Beside that, I'll see whether the chips recover from the wobble, and whether -0.27% and -0.14% hold to the close. This is a paper-portfolio diary, not investment advice.
