KOSPI Clings to 6,800 as Foreigners Dump Over 3 Trillion Won
Right now the KOSPI is sitting at 6,826.30, down 0.92%, moving through the late session, while the KOSDAQ has slipped to 841.32, down 0.62%. It's 1:40pm, with an hour and fifty minutes left before the close. Stacked against the 12:10 briefing, the KOSPI's drop widened by another 0.34 percentage points, while the KOSDAQ actually clawed back 0.05 points. Same hour and a half, but the two indices walked in opposite directions.
The hour foreign investors dumped over 3 trillion won
The KOSPI-side flows explain the wider drop pretty plainly. Foreigners net-sold 32,682 hundred-million won worth, and institutions sold another 10,169 hundred-million on top. KOSDAQ told a different story — foreigners came in as net buyers at 538 hundred-million won, with only institutions selling, at 730 hundred-million won. That gap shows up directly as the KOSDAQ's small rebound.
| Category | KOSPI | KOSDAQ |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign | -32,682 (100M KRW) | +538 (100M KRW) |
| Institution | -10,169 (100M KRW) | -730 (100M KRW) |
Last night's US session (9/28 close) is part of the backdrop too. The S&P 500 fell 0.77% and the Nasdaq fell 0.92%, with oil and rate pressure weighing in and Boeing tumbling 6.9% as all three major indices closed lower together. Just as one headline put it — "oil and rates turn cold, chip strength not enough... KOSPI barely clings to 6,800" — today's KOSPI looks like it inherited that exact overhang.
Sectors split, and the currency wobbled
By last night's US close, bio/healthcare was the strong pocket while gold miners and clean energy lagged — in the same vein as gold itself getting slammed 2.7%, down to a two-month low. On the currency side, the won-dollar rate eased to 1,354.51 won, down 0.94%, while the dollar index climbed to 101.20, up 0.23%. Among my holdings, Poongsan sits at +7.1% and KT&G at +1.1% in the green, while HD Hyundai Electric is at -14.4% and Orion at -8.7% — a pretty split picture on paper.
With an hour and fifty minutes left, what I'm watching for is simply whether 6,800 holds. I want to see if the KOSPI's widened drop versus the 12:10 mark carries through to the close, or if it manages even a small bounce back the way the KOSDAQ just did.
