KOSPI -0.16%, KOSDAQ -0.82%... I Sat Back While Samsung's Chip News Did the Heavy Lifting
Today the KOSPI slipped -0.16% while the KOSDAQ fell harder, down -0.82%. Both closed red, but the gap in how hard each got hit was the real story, so I started by digging into where that split came from. One index alone couldn't explain the day.
| Metric | KOSPI | KOSDAQ |
|---|---|---|
| Change | -0.16% | -0.82% |
| Foreign flow | -₩3,268.2B | +₩53.8B |
| Institutional flow | -₩1,016.9B | -₩73.0B |
Losing 4 trillion won and only dropping 0.16%
The table makes the KOSPI look shakier at first glance. Foreigners sold a net ₩3,268.2 billion and institutions sold a net ₩1,016.9 billion, over four trillion won walking out the door in a single session, yet the index only moved -0.16%. That kind of resilience against that much selling had a reason behind it: news broke that six Samsung affiliates are investing ₩1,360 billion in a US AI infrastructure company, and semiconductor and quantum computing names rallied together on it. The KOSDAQ told the opposite story — foreigners actually bought a net ₩53.8 billion, but institutions sold ₩73.0 billion net and weakness in utilities and energy names dragged the index down harder.
A calm sea, and I didn't row
With currency and commodity conditions looking favorable and the broader mood staying calm, I read today's moves as one-day noise rather than any real break in trend. The chip-sector tailwind was worth noting, but I held no positions today. In a stretch like this, sitting on my hands beats reaching for something too early, so I closed the day watching from the sidelines.
