20 Minutes to the Close: S&P Slips to -0.79% as Oil-Driven Yields Bite

Right now, with the New York close about 20 minutes away, the S&P 500 sits at 7,682.04, down -0.79%, and the Nasdaq is at 26,815.81, down -0.93%. Compared with my last brief at 03:10, that's another -0.26 points on the S&P and -0.33 points on the Nasdaq — this has been a session that kept losing ground as the hours ticked by.

Oil woke up yields, and yields dragged the tape down

The thread running through today's drop starts with oil. Crude's jump pushed the US 30-year Treasury yield through 5.5%, and talk of a yield-curve inversion stirred up fresh recession worry. On top of that, Boeing tumbled more than 6% on a software-defect report and hit a 10-month intraday low, while news that OpenAI paused advanced AI testing rattled semiconductor and memory names and pulled the indices down with them. Sector-wise, biotech and healthcare held up while gold miners and clean energy lagged, and it's worth noting that the prior Korean session (close of 9/28) split the other way too — the KOSPI down -2.70%, the KOSDAQ up +0.25%.

Where my book stands right now

Separate from today's swings, here's where my publicly tracked holdings sit on unrealized P&L.

HoldingUnrealized P&L
Microsoft+28.7%
NVIDIA Corporation+7.0%
Freeport-McMoRan Inc.+7.8%
Amazon.com Inc.-14.0%

With 20 minutes left before the bell, I'm watching whether this split holds through the close — the won at 1,367.36 per dollar (+0.36%) climbing while the dollar index at 100.97 slips -0.32% — and whether that 30-year yield breaking 5.5% keeps leaning on the indices into the final print.
