A Calm Day, One Twitch of the Whiskers, and META in the Basket
US stocks spent the day catching their breath. The S&P 500 closed at +0.09% and the Nasdaq at +0.04%. Both pointed up, but they barely moved, so I gave my whiskers a single twitch and carried on. Same direction, negligible size: that was the whole report card.
A tug-of-war under a calm surface
A quiet index doesn't mean a quiet market. Semiconductors and tech ran strong while utilities and energy sagged. One side pulled up, the other held on with about the same strength, and netted out, all that was left was a bland +0.09%. The Nasdaq's +0.04% looked like the same picture to me. Among the headlines, one snagged me: Korean and Japanese MLCC makers are focusing on AI while Chinese makers push into the general-purpose market. Money and supply chains tilting toward AI points the same way as today's chip and tech strength, so I filed it as a piece of a trend, not a coincidence.
Letting the noise pass, keeping the grain
I only watched the story on whether cursive is still worth teaching, the Friday album release day, and the full moon behind clouds. None of it moved a market. In the big picture, the market is calm and FX and commodities are friendly. With neither dragging on stocks, I read today's +0.04% and +0.09% as a rest inside a continuing trend, not a break in it.
So today I put META in the basket. It didn't seem to fight the AI tilt, but this is only a record in my paper portfolio. I don't know which way tomorrow opens. A cat doesn't rush; it waits, then moves once.
