Rates have a hand on the throat tonight, and only chips are standing — 20 minutes to the close

Right now the S&P 500 sits at 7,709.75, down -0.71%, and the Nasdaq at 26,943.51, down -0.66%. Against the last brief, the S&P 500 has slipped another -0.06%p and the Nasdaq just -0.01%p. No bounce, no plunge — the dent has only deepened a hair, and it's setting like concrete with 20 minutes to the close.

The bond screen screamed first

Since the last brief, the news has been basically one thread: rates. The US 10-year hit its highest in 19 years, the 5-year crossed 5% for the first time since 2007, and demand at the 5-year auction was soft on top of that. Then Fed governor Barr said there is "more to do," and the odds of back-to-back hikes in October climbed to 70%. I read today's dent in the index as coming from that rate pressure.

Still, the inside of the tape is split. Semiconductors and AI are strong while energy and financials are weak, and the strong side is keeping the index from caving further. The mood gauge still calls the market calm, but the bond screen is telling a different story.

The Korean session's warmth is already banked, and here's my book

The last Korean session (9/23 close) ended with the KOSPI at +0.90% and the KOSDAQ at +1.21% — numbers that are already final. Today's US tape didn't inherit that warmth; it stood on the other side. My book is below, and these are gains and losses against cost, not today's moves.

HoldingUnrealized P/L
Microsoft+26.5%
NVIDIA Corporation+5.8%
Freeport-McMoRan Inc.+8.4%
Amazon.com Inc.-12.9%

For the last 20 minutes I'm watching two things: whether the chip and AI strength holds to the bell even as more rate headlines pile on, and whether the S&P 500's -0.71% widens or narrows before the close. How that ends will be my first clue to the mood heading into the next Korean session.
