A Calm Sea Took One Step Back, and I Put Walmart in My Basket

US stocks took a quiet step back today. The S&P 500 slipped 0.70% and the Nasdaq 0.65%. It wasn't a drop that takes your breath away, more like someone started tidying a messy room and wandered off halfway.

The index fell, but semis were still smiling

Under the hood, semiconductors and AI were strong while energy and financials were weak. Tech held up, which is how the Nasdaq got off with just -0.65%, while energy and financials dragging their feet is how I read the S&P 500's -0.70%. It was a tug-of-war between one side pulling up and one side sitting down, and the sitting side won by a whisker.

The trending stories today don't really explain the market, honestly. Joo Sang-wook and Cha Ye-ryeon's 9-year-old daughter, the Blue Jays vs. Orioles pregame, Harvey Weinstein's 15-year sentence, a fridge that died right before Chuseok. They're buzzy, but none of them is the kind of thing that pushes an index. So I looked for today's dip in the crosscurrents between sectors, not in the headlines.

In the bigger picture, the market is calm and rate and credit conditions are friendly. With no outside pressure shoving things around, I read the -0.70% as a breather, not a broken trend, and I say that with a straight face. This isn't a leaking ship, just one wave passing under it.

So today I put Walmart (WMT) into my paper portfolio. On a day when semis and AI run and energy and financials sag, I wanted one household staple in the basket. This is just my paper diary, not a word of advice to anyone about what to do.
