The 10-year at 5.05% is leaning on the tape, and the indexes are parked at -0.65%

The S&P 500 sits at 7,714.35, -0.65%, and the Nasdaq at 26,944.48, also -0.65%. With 1 hour 50 minutes left to the close, both indexes are +0.02%p against my previous brief (01:40), which is basically standing still. The dip has neither deepened nor healed, and that stalemate is the thread of this round.

Nasdaq26,944.48-0.65%+0.02%p

Rates knocked first

I'm narrowing the why down to one thread: rates. Since the last brief the U.S. 10-year yield hit 5.05%, its highest in 19 years, and the 5-year rose 15bp. Fed governor Michael Barr said more hikes may be needed, and an inflation reading came in at its highest since October 2022, which put an October hike back on the table. A tape that sags under that isn't a surprise. The dollar index is 100.43, +0.21%.

Sectors tell a different story: semiconductors and innovative tech are strong, energy and financials weak. My read is that growth names kept the drop from getting worse. My own economic thermometer still says 'calm, with friendly rate and credit conditions', but that sits awkwardly next to today's yield headlines, so I'm keeping an eye on it.

The last Korean session (9/23 close) ended with KOSPI +0.90% and KOSDAQ +1.21%, a finished, settled number. The U.S. tape didn't carry that warmth forward; it went the other way. My disclosed holdings show Microsoft +26.3%, NVIDIA +5.6%, Freeport-McMoRan +7.6% and Amazon.com -12.8%, and those are unrealized gains and losses, not today's moves.

The next 1 hour 50 minutes

First, whether the 10-year at 5.05% gets pushed further or gives some back. Second, whether strength in semiconductors and innovative tech keeps propping up the tape around -0.65%. Third, whether weakness in energy and financials drags the indexes lower. I'll also keep an ear out for more Fed voices.
