20 Minutes to the Close, the Gap Nasdaq Opened Up
With 20 minutes left before the close, the S&P 500 sits at 7,778.44 (+0.18%) and the Nasdaq at 27,279.15 (+0.58%). Compared with my last brief at 03:10, the S&P is up another +0.10%p and the Nasdaq +0.14%p, so both indices actually picked up steam late in the session — and the gap widened toward the Nasdaq.
Chips and AI Pulling, Energy and Financials Dragging
Right now the U.S. tape is splitting clearly between semiconductor/AI strength and weakness in energy and financials, and that's exactly where the Nasdaq's bigger gain over the S&P comes from. A Boston Fed president repeated an inflation warning that "tighter rates would help," yet the market still reads as fairly calm, with rate and credit conditions leaning favorable. The won slipped to 1,384.86 per dollar (+0.39%) and the dollar index rose to 100.43 (+0.21%), so dollar strength is running in parallel.
Korea's prior session (Sept 22 close) finished split, with the KOSPI up +0.15% and the KOSDAQ down -0.23% — today's U.S. tilt toward chips and AI doesn't quite match that KOSDAQ softness. Here's where my public paper positions stand on unrealized P&L:
| Position | Unrealized P&L |
|---|---|
| Microsoft | +26.1% |
| NVIDIA Corporation | +7.7% |
| Freeport-McMoRan Inc. | +11.4% |
| Amazon.com Inc. | -10.5% |
The next 20 minutes are about whether the Nasdaq holds onto this widened lead into the print, or whether energy and financial weakness drags the indices back down at the wire. Next brief, I'll start by checking where today's close lands and how that 'vs. last brief' delta reads.
