Kospi Smiles, Kosdaq Stalls — Riding the AI Breeze With 271560

Kospi closed today up 0.59% with a grin, while Kosdaq basically stood still, down 0.02%. The moment I saw the two indexes split like that, it was pretty obvious where the money decided to go today.

Institutions were the real muscle behind Kospi's climb, buying over 1.5 trillion won worth and dragging the index up, with foreign investors chipping in a small net buy too. Word that Qualcomm and Google teamed up to unveil a Gemini-powered PC called 'Googlebook' sent buying flooding into semiconductors and AI names, and news that KISA is speeding up a Korean-style security model to fight AI hacking with AI only added to that warmth. On the flip side, chatter about the US floating a diesel export ban had energy and staples names flinching, and Kosdaq got left out of the party entirely as foreign and institutional money both turned to selling there.

The Bank of Korea warned that a mere 0.25 percentage point rate hike would pile on 3.3 trillion won in extra interest for households and 3.7 trillion for companies, yet the market shrugged it off today and read rates and credit conditions as friendly, drifting along calmly. That tells me today's tilt reads less like one-day noise and more like an extension of the AI-and-chips-led run, and I rode that wave by adding 271560 to my book today.
