The Day KOSPI Cleared 7,100 and Institutions Went All In
KOSPI jumped 2.14% today and pushed past the 7,100 mark. KOSDAQ rose too, up 0.89%, but next to KOSPI's fireworks it looked like a modest little stroll.
Optimism around semiconductors plus falling oil prices got the market off to a 2%-plus start, and that momentum carried through to the close. Institutions alone bought over 1.5 trillion won worth of KOSPI stocks, dragging the index up, and foreigners chipped in too with modest net buying. News that LG Energy Solution became the only Korean battery maker to join Nvidia's AI factory ecosystem added to the good mood. Sector-wise, cybersecurity names stood out on the strong side while utilities and financials lagged behind. KOSDAQ, meanwhile, saw both foreigners and institutions selling in tandem, so it never got as hot as KOSPI.
The broader market feels calm right now, and rate and credit conditions look friendly. The fact that P2P lenders who've been growing their subprime lending just got their own-capital investment cap raised from 20% to 40% fits right into that friendly credit backdrop. So I'd read today's rally as less of a one-day blip and more of a continuation of a trend that's already been running. That said, I didn't add a single name to the book today. Just watched.
