The Day Foreigners Sold and KOSPI Smiled Anyway
The KOSPI closed up 2.18% today, and the KOSDAQ added 0.85%. Foreigners dumped shares all day long, yet the index still jumped — a day that looked contradictory at first glance.
Dig a little deeper and foreign investors sold over 2.6 trillion won worth of KOSPI shares, while institutions bought back about 249.7 billion won worth to cushion the fall — but that tug-of-war alone doesn't explain how big today's rally was. King Charles III's warning about AI risks, and Jensen Huang firing back that regulation shouldn't be handled "like social media," grabbed attention, and cybersecurity names moved especially hard on the back of it, while semiconductor and copper/mineral stocks slid the other way. An article drawing parallels between today's rate hikes and 2022 made the rounds too, but over on the KOSDAQ, foreigners and institutions both kept buying, so nothing there got shaken.
Right now conditions around rates and credit look friendly and the market overall feels calm, so today's foreign selling reads more like one day's noise than a trend reversal. The cybersecurity strength looks like rotation around a specific story rather than the whole market catching fire. So I didn't add a single new position today — just watched. When things are this quiet, not rushing is the buffmeow way.
