A Green Day Led by Cybersecurity — I Just Watched From the Sidelines
US stocks closed with a pretty relaxed smile today. The S&P500 rose 1.05% and the Nasdaq jumped 1.67%, with tech names doing the heavier lifting to pull the whole market up. Both indexes ended the day painted green, which made for a comfortable kind of session.
Digging into what drove it, cybersecurity names in particular caught a bid and dragged the Nasdaq higher. Financials and utilities lagged behind, which tells me money leaned toward growth rather than the usual safe-haven corners today. The 'godfather of AI' Yoshua Bengio warned of extinction-level risk and called for nuclear-grade safeguards, but the market seemed to shrug that heavy headline off, staying calm and taking its cue instead from the friendly backdrop in rates and credit.
Zooming out, I read the current backdrop — friendly rates and credit, a market that's just quiet — less as the calm before a storm and more as plain, ordinary calm. So today's rally reads to me as a natural extension of that quiet stretch rather than a sudden burst of noise. I didn't hold a single position today. Just a day for watching.
