Behind the Calm Close, Foreigners Sold While Institutions Caught the Tape

Today the KOSPI closed up 0.67% and the KOSDAQ jumped 1.15%, with the KOSDAQ clearly carrying more punch. On the surface it looked like an easy, unremarkable green day, but once I looked under the hood, it wasn't quite that smooth.

On the KOSPI side, foreigners dumped about 1.68 trillion won while institutions stepped in and absorbed roughly 1.24 trillion won, and that's really what pushed the index higher. The KOSDAQ told a different story — foreign and institutional flows were both modest there, just tens of billions of won each way, yet cybersecurity names ran hard enough on their own to drag the index up. If LG AI Research head Bae Kyung-hoon's line that 'the AI-pace-slowdown talk doesn't apply to Korea — we need to chase and build the market ourselves' lifted the mood around tech names, the Fed's unanimous rate hike, framed as the start of a run of hikes rather than a one-off, put semiconductors and copper-and-minerals names on edge and sent them lower instead.

The extension of the real-residence requirement waiver in land-transaction permit zones through the end of next year was today's other talking point, but it wasn't the kind of news that changes an index's direction. Overall the market itself stayed calm and didn't shake much, but underneath that calm, the currency and commodity prices keep quietly grinding on people's nerves. So I'm reading today's gain more as a breather than the start of a new trend, and true to that, I didn't add a single new name today — just watched.
