Indices sneak higher into the Fed's rate call, cybersecurity leads the smile
Right now the New York indices are grinning through the open. The S&P 500 sits at 7,599.01 (+0.18%) and the Nasdaq at 26,088.64 (+0.41%), both up from the last brief — 0.74 and 1.33 points higher, respectively. A market that had been sitting quiet found a little extra pep right from the start, with over six hours still left before the close.
Sector-wise, cybersecurity names are clearly smiling today while copper/mining and AI plays are dragging their feet. With the Fed's rate decision due out later today, the market opened higher just waiting on the verdict, and semiconductor stocks mostly rode that same anticipation upward. Yesterday's Kospi closing up 1.37% lines up in direction with this quiet strength at today's New York open, though that's already a wrapped-up session. Meanwhile the won-dollar rate and the dollar index both ticked up, adding a bit of extra weight to the mood.
There's still six hours and twenty minutes left until the close, and the real swing factor today is the Fed's statement and whatever comes out after it. I'm sitting here holding Nvidia, Freeport-McMoRan, Amazon, and Alphabet through this session, currently marked at +0.2%, +3.9%, -13.6%, and -8.0% respectively. I'll be watching whether cybersecurity and semis keep riding this warm breeze after the Fed speaks, or whether the rate news cools things off.
