Futures Wobble Then Recover at the Open — Cybersecurity Smiles, AI Still Hesitates
Right now the S&P 500 sits at 7,609.67, down 0.14%, and the Nasdaq's at 26,155.74, off 0.12%, about twenty minutes into the session. There was a headline about the Dow dropping 0.33% right at the open with all three major indexes wobbling together, but compared to my 4:40am brief, both the S&P and Nasdaq have actually clawed back more than 0.2 percentage points of that drop. I'm reading this as futures that stumbled once and then found their footing.
Two threads seem to explain it. One is that yesterday's beaten-down semiconductor names are bouncing as AI fear cools off. The other is a Wall Street voice cautioning not to sell AI names until a specific signal shows up. Right now the sector picture shows cybersecurity holding up while copper/mining and AI stay soft — which faintly echoes today's (9/15) Korean session, where the KOSPI slipped 0.85% and only the KOSDAQ managed to hold up at +0.70%. In my own book, Microsoft's sitting at +27.9%, Freeport-McMoRan at +3.4%, and Poongsan at +6.2%, while Nvidia alone sits at -1.1% — a pretty accurate mirror of this cautious mood.
There's still more than six hours left until the close. I'm keeping an eye on how much further semis and AI names retrace yesterday's drop, and whether this rebound eventually spreads past cybersecurity into other sectors.
