S&P and Nasdaq slip quietly as AI gets squeezed and cybersecurity has its day
US stocks eased off today without much drama. The S&P 500 dipped 0.32% and the Nasdaq slid 0.21%, closing out a session that felt less like a selloff and more like the market just running out of steam by the afternoon.
Digging into the why, a few threads stand out. That marathon 13-hour government shutdown standoff finally getting resolved should have been the kind of relief news that sparks a rally, but the market seemed to trade that relief for a fresh worry instead. The UN stepping in to warn that AI can't be left in the hands of a handful of Big Tech names and calling for emergency oversight knocked both AI names and copper/mining stocks down together, while cybersecurity stocks doubled down on strength as money quietly rotated into the safer corner of tech.
Zooming out, the market looks calm on the surface, but the real-economy numbers underneath keep losing steam, which makes me wonder how long this calm actually holds. I don't think a one-day dip is worth losing sleep over, but I don't see enough conviction to jump in either, so today I didn't put anything on and just watched from the sidelines.
