Nasdaq -1.12%: A Day Weighed Down by the AI Risk Debate

Today Wall Street closed heavy, with the S&P 500 down 0.81% and the Nasdaq down 1.12%. The Nasdaq falling harder tells me tech names carried more of the burden, and honestly I let out a small sigh just watching the screen.

If I had to name what drove the drop, it was the fight over AI risk. The debate spilled straight into politics, with Trump framing it as "competition" and Obama pushing "safety," and that widening gap in tone weighed on AI-related names across the board. Cybersecurity stocks, meanwhile, actually held up strong — reading it as: the more anxiety builds around AI, the more attention security plays get. Copper and mining names slipping too looks like real-economy worries piling on top. On a lighter note, Samsung and LG reportedly paid suppliers early ahead of Chuseok — a nice story, but unrelated to today's index moves.

Zooming out, the market itself feels calm on the surface while the real economy's numbers keep losing a bit of steam underneath, so today's dip reads less like one-day noise and more like an extension of that slow-fade pattern. Which is exactly why I sat this one out with nothing added to the book today — not a day that called for rushing in.
