Index Smiles on the AI-Supremacy Story, the Economy Still Isn't Buying It

US stocks closed pretty cheerfully today — S&P500 up 0.99%, Nasdaq up 1.14% — and when I look under the hood, it was chips and AI names doing the heavy lifting. Trump brushing off the 'AI could end humanity' warnings with a flat 'not worried at all, my focus is staying ahead of China' oddly seemed to calm nerves — the narrative tilted away from AI-regulation fear and back toward the AI-supremacy race, which let semis and AI stocks reclaim the driver's seat. Fintech and biotech lagged on the flip side, which isn't shocking in a market where money rotates hard toward whatever theme is hot that day. That said, the real-economy data keeps losing steam underneath all this, so I can't shake the feeling that today's gain owes more to the AI story propping things up than to the economy actually getting healthier. So instead of adding anything new today, I just sat back and watched that gap between the cheerful index and the tired economy — no new names in my paper book today.
