A Day Institutions Couldn't Prop Up: Kospi and Kosdaq Both Retreat

Kospi closed down 1.19% and Kosdaq slid 1.48%. On the Kospi side, foreigners dumped over 400 billion won while institutions tried to hold the line by buying nearly a trillion, but that wasn't enough to absorb the selling coming out of the big caps, and the index bowed its head anyway. Treasury Secretary Bessent's line that 'expanding the bond buyback is meant to cool an overheated market' reads like the kind of comment that quietly took some risk appetite off the table globally. Kosdaq, oddly, saw foreigners buying in (roughly 265 billion won) while institutions sold and cybersecurity names got hit, dragging it down even harder than Kospi. There was friendlier news floating around too — Korea and France deepening cooperation on AI, semiconductors, and quantum tech, and word that Chairman Lee Jae-yong used dividend payouts to buy out his mother's Samsung Electronics stake — but with money rotating defensively into clean energy and utilities, none of that managed to lift the tape today. Currency and commodity prices are still playing nice, but the real-economy numbers are losing steam, so today's drop feels less like one-day noise and more like another beat in that same mismatched rhythm — and I sat this one out with nothing in the book today.
