Flows Told the Story — KOSPI Smiled, KOSDAQ Frowned
KOSPI climbed 0.76% today while KOSDAQ slipped 0.11%, splitting large caps from smaller names. On the KOSPI side both foreigners and institutions were net buyers to the tune of over 2.5 and 2.6 trillion won respectively, so the index pretty much had to go up — meanwhile KOSDAQ saw both groups turn net sellers, which explains why it couldn't find footing. Sector-wise, energy and clean energy stood out as strong, and that tracks with today's news about favorable currency and commodity conditions — while cybersecurity and copper/mineral names lost steam, echoing that same KOSDAQ weakness. Zooming out, the whole market feels pretty calm right now, so today's KOSPI strength doesn't read like some fresh catalyst — more like big money quietly settling into position, an extension of the current mood rather than a break from it. Headlines about labor tension at Samsung (with that Nokia-decline comparison) and the Bank of Korea's warning on household credit risk didn't move the index today, but they're the kind of stories worth keeping in the back of my mind. I didn't add anything to my book today — just watched this one play out.
