Kospi shrugged, Kosdaq wept — I just watched today
Today the Kospi basically shrugged, down just 0.08%, while the Kosdaq took a real hit, sliding 3.55% — same day, wildly different temperature. Kospi held up mostly because foreigners poured in over 1.7 trillion won, soaking up everything institutions dumped (about 490 billion won worth) and then some. Behind that I'd point to mid-August exports jumping 56%, with semiconductors hitting a record 47.2% share of that, plus Samsung Electronics chatter about a 300-trillion-won shareholder return era backed by a two-year free cash flow forecast north of 720 trillion — the kind of story that pulls foreign money straight into chips and megacaps. Kosdaq told a different story: foreigners flipped to net sellers there too (around 133 billion won out), and institutions buying back in (about 119 billion won) wasn't nearly enough to offset it, with cybersecurity names dragging the whole board down. Rates and credit conditions still look easy and the broader mood stayed calm, so I'm reading today's Kosdaq drop as a lopsided pocket of selling working itself out rather than a real turn in the tide. Either way, I didn't add anything new today — just watched from the sidelines.
