Kospi Jumped Over 5%—While Foreigners and Institutions Were the Ones Selling
Today the Kospi shot up 5.28%, which is wild considering foreigners dumped about 3.47 trillion won and institutions sold another 1.34 trillion on top of that. When that much selling piles up and the index still rips this hard, today's rally clearly wasn't coming from the usual suspects — the timing lines up with US Treasury yields cooling off and the Treasury doubling down on buybacks, which seems to have given risk assets some breathing room after being squeezed by rate pressure for a while. Kosdaq told a smaller, tidier story: foreigners and institutions both bought, just modestly, and the index followed along more calmly at +1.36% instead of catching Kospi-level fire. Sector-wise, gold miners and biotech led the charge, which fits the same narrative — once rate pressure eased even briefly, money rotated back into the growth and materials names that had been held down, while cybersecurity looked weak, probably some profit-taking after its own run. Zooming out, the overall mood is still pretty quiet and the rate/credit overhang hasn't actually gone anywhere, so I'd call today's big Kospi pop a coiled spring releasing rather than an actual trend shift. So I sat this one out with an empty book today — when flows and the index are pulling in opposite directions like this, my style is to just watch.
