Chip Shock Rattles the Kospi, I'm Sitting This One Out
The Kospi dropped 5.58% in a single day. Overnight news out of the US — Micron down 7%, SK Hynix and Sandisk down nearly 9% — hit hardest where it always does, since chipmakers carry so much weight in the Kospi. Foreigners actually bought in, about 91.4 billion won worth, but institutions dumped 795.1 billion won and dragged the index down harder; the Kosdaq felt a lighter version of the same story, down just 0.54% with foreigners net buying 36.6 billion won against institutions selling 417.6 billion won. Money fled toward energy and biotech while copper and mineral names, along with cybersecurity stocks, got dragged down together — a sign this fear stayed concentrated in chips rather than spreading everywhere. Rates and credit conditions still look friendly and the broader market feels calm, so I'm reading today's drop as a local squall in semiconductors, not a crack in the whole system. So I kept my hands off everything today and just watched.
