US Stumbled, but KOSPI Rips Higher Solo on Samsung-SK Hynix Payout Buzz

KOSPI is up 2.42% to 6,977.94 as I write this. Wall Street's last close (8/14) had the S&P and Nasdaq both slipping a touch, so Seoul today is doing its own thing entirely, going the other way. Foreigners piled in with over ₩3 trillion in net buying, easily outweighing about ₩1 trillion of institutional selling — the story underneath is that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, having held firm instead of cashing out, are now fueling bets that a big shareholder-return policy lands sometime this month, and a generally calm market with friendly rate and credit conditions isn't hurting either. KOSDAQ, meanwhile, barely budged at +0.38% to 864.65, with both foreigners and institutions selling there — a pretty stark contrast. On my book, Vertex is stinging the most at -4.6% while the rest sit quiet, and between now and the close I'm watching whether this buyback talk actually turns into a real announcement.
